St. Ambrose Destroys Kenosis Heresy & Nestorian Heresy

In this blog post, I emphasise in the passages from the writings of the Holy Saint and warrior for Jesus St. Ambrose. Where he shows that Jesus’ human and divine natures do become distinct in passages of Scripture, but never separated. Also, he shows that within the Corpus Christi, Jesus fully retains the Glory and Divinity thought the Incarnation. Never putting this aside or abandoning it.

58. When we read, then, that the Lord of glory was crucified, let us not suppose that He was crucified as in His glory1 Corinthians 2:8 It is because He Who is God is also man, God by virtue of His Divinity, and by taking upon Him of the flesh, the man Christ Jesus, that the Lord of glory is said to have been crucified; for, possessing both natures, that is, the human and the divine, He endured the Passion in His humanity, IN ORDER WITHOUT DISTINCTION HE WHO SUFFERED SHOULD BE CALLED BOTH LORD OF GLORY AND THE SON OF MAN, even as it is written: Who descended from heaven. John 3:13

Exposition of the Christian Faith, Book II

Bam! Blessed Ambrose destroys the Nestorian heresy because he asserts that “he who suffered should be called both Lord of Glory and The Son of man“. Nestorius asserts that Suffering is only experience in the Person “Jesus”. Blessed Ambrose does assert that the Passion of Christ was not experienced in Divinity. However, he just means that by Nature, God does not undergo death because God is unto the ages of ages, no beginning no end. He does not mean what the blasphemer Nestorius means, in that there are two subjects in the Incarnation that are divided.

62. If you pronounce Him less than the Father in this respect [respect to the Incarnation], I cannot deny it; nevertheless, to speak in the words of Scripture, He was not begotten inferior, but made lower, Hebrews 2:9 that is, made inferior. And how was He made lower, except that, being in the form of God, He thought it not a prey that He should be equal with God, but emptied Himself; Philippians 2:6-7 NOT, INDEED, PARTING WITH WHAT HE WAS, BUT TAKING UP WHAT HE WAS NOT for He took the form of a servant. Philippians 2:6-7

Exposition of the Christian Faith, Book II

Blessed Ambrose beautifully interprets Philippians 2:6-7, emphasising that Jesus though it not robbery to make it known His privileges of Divinity. Not as the heretics do, interpret this to mean that in some way our Lord set aside Divinity. As a disgusting misuse of Scripture.

To God be the Glory, may He strengthen us to be mighty warriors such as the Blessed Ambrose!
