Jesus in the likeness of Jehovah
“The heavens praise your marvels, O Jehovah, Yes, your faithfulness in the congregation of the holy ones. For who in the skies can compare to Jehovah? Who among the sons of God is like Jehovah? God is held in awe in the council of holy ones; He is grand and awe-inspiring to all who are around him. O Jehovah God of armies, Who is mighty like you, O Jah? Your faithfulness surrounds you.” (Psalm 89:5-8 NWT)
“There is none like you among the gods, O Jehovah, There are no works like yours.” (Psalm 86:8 NWT)
“and he [Solomon] said: “O Jehovah the God of Israel, there is no God [elohim] like you in the heavens above or on the earth beneath, keeping the covenant and showing loyal love to your servants who are walking before you with all their heart” (1 Kings 8:23 NWT)
From these verses, we clearly see that there are no “gods/God” like Jehovah. Now we look at the New Testament.
“Long ago God spoke to our forefathers by means of the prophets on many occasions and in many ways. Now at the end of these days he has spoken to us by means of a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the systems of things. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the EXACT REPRESENTATION of his very being, and he sustains all things by the word of his power. And after he had made a purification for our sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” (Hebrews 1:1-3 NWT)
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; because by means of him all other things were created in the heavens and on the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All other things have been created through him and for him. Also, he is before all other things, and by means of him all other things were made to exist, and he is the head of the body, the congregation. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might become the one who is first in all things; because God was pleased to have all fullness to dwell in him.” (Colossians 1:15-19 NWT)
“Keep this mental attitude in you that was also in Christ Jesus, who, although he was existing in God’s form, did not even consider the idea of trying to be equal to God.” (Philippians 2:5-6 NWT)
How can Jesus be a created angel, (god) and also be the expressed image of God, image of the invisible God, and exact representation of God’s glory? The Psalms state that there are no gods that are like Jehovah? Therefore, either Jesus IS Jehovah or there is a contradiction in the Bible (the Bible states that angels are not like Jehovah and then Jesus [an angel] is referred to have likeness with Jehovah).
Another issue that JW’s run into is that Jesus is described as “sitting on the majesty on High“, which is attributed only to Jehovah.
Jehovah is high above all the nations; His glory is above the heavens. Who is like Jehovah our God, The one who dwells on high? (Psalm 113:4-5 NWT)
He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. (Hebrews 1:3 NWT)
Jesus claims to give Eternal Life
My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I GIVE THEM EVERLASTING LIFE, and they will by no means ever be destroyed, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is something greater than all other things, and no one can snatch them out of the hand of the Father. I and the Father are one.” Once again the Jews picked up stones to stone him. (John 10:27-33 NWT)
Jehovah Created the World, Jesus created the World
I am Jehovah, and there is no one else. There is no God except me. I will strengthen you, although you did not know me, In order that people may know From the rising of the sun to its setting That there is none besides me. I am Jehovah, and there is no one else. I form light and create darkness, I make peace and create calamity; I, Jehovah, am doing all these things. You heavens, rain down from above; Let the clouds pour down righteousness. Let the earth open up and be fruitful with salvation, And let it cause righteousness to spring up at the same time. I, Jehovah, have created it.” (Isaiah 45:5-8 NWT)
This is what JEHOVAH says, the Holy One of Israel, the One who formed him: “Would you question me about the things coming And command me about my sons and the works of my hands? I made the earth and CREATED man on it. I STRETCHED OUT THE HEAVENS WITH MY OWN HANDS , And I give orders to all their army.” (Isaiah 45:11-12 NWT)
This is what Jehovah says, your Repurchaser, Who formed you since you were in the womb:“I am Jehovah, who made everything.I stretched out the heavens by myself, And I spread out the earth. Who was with me? (Isaiah 44:24 NWT)
Why do you say, O Jacob, and why do you declare, O Israel, ‘My way is hidden from Jehovah, And I receive no justice from God’? Do you not know? Have you not heard? Jehovah, THE CREATOR OF THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH, is a God for all eternity. He never tires out or grows weary. His understanding is unsearchable. (Isaiah 40:27-28 NWT)
You alone are Jehovah; you made the heavens, yes, the heaven of the heavens and all their army, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. And you preserve all of them alive, and the army of the heavens are bowing down to you. (Nehemiah 9:6 NWT)
May you be blessed by the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth. The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’s (Psalm 115:15-16 NKJV)
In reference to the Son
And: “At the beginning, O Lord, YOU LAID THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE WORLD, and the heavens are the works of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; and just like a garment, they will all wear out, and you will wrap them up just as a cloak, as a garment, and they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will never come to an end.” (Hebrews 1:10-12 NWT)
Hebrews is quoting Psalm 102:25-27;
Long ago YOU laid the foundations of the earth, And the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain;Just like a garment they will all wear out.Just like clothing you will replace them, and they will pass away. But you are the same, and your years will never end. (Psalm 102:25-27 NWT)
Who is that “you” in this passage, it is Jehovah!
A prayer of the oppressed one when he is in despair and pours out his concern before Jehovah. (Psalm 102 heading)
O Jehovah, hear my prayer; Let my cry for help reach you. (Psalm 102:1 NWT)
My days are like a fading shadow, And I am withering like grass. But YOU remain forever, O Jehovah, And your fame will endure for all generations. (Psalm 102:11-12 NWT)
The nations will fear the name of Jehovah, And all the kings of the earth your glory. For Jehovah will rebuild Zion; He will appear in his glory. (Psalm 102:15-16 NWT)
This is written for the future generation, So that a people yet to be brought forth will praise Jah. For he looks down from his holy height, From the heavens Jehovah views the earth, (Psalm 102:18-19 NWT)
So that the name of Jehovah will be declared in Zion And his praise in Jerusalem, When the peoples and kingdoms Gather together to serve Jehovah. (Psalm 102:21-22 NWT)
More proof Jesus is Jehovah creator of Heaven and Earth and not created.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; because by means of him all other things were created in the heavens and on the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All other things have been created through him and for him. Also, HE IS BEFORE ALL OTHER THINGS, AND BY MEANS OF HIM ALL OTHER THINGS WERE MADE TO EXIST. (Colossians 1:15-18 NWT)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god. This one WAS IN THE BEGINNING WITH GOD. ALL THINGS CAME INTO EXISTENCE THROUGH HIM, AND APART FROM HIM NOT EVEN ONE THING CAME INTO EXISTENCE. (John 1:1-3)
Jesus is Jehovah in the Flesh
He said: “I am a voice of someone crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make the way of Jehovah straight,’ just as Isaiah the prophet said.” (John 1:23)
Parallel to Isaiah 40
A voice of one calling out in the wilderness: “Clear up the way of JEHOVAH! Make a straight highway through the desert for OUR GOD. (Isaiah 40:3)
Jesus forgives sins, Jehovah forgives sins, Holy Spirit Forgives sins
However, after some days he again entered into Ca·perʹna·um, and the word spread that he was at home. And so many gathered that there was no more room, not even around the door, and he began to speak the word to them. And they brought him a paralytic carried by four men. But they could not bring him right to Jesus because of the crowd, so they removed the roof above Jesus, and after digging an opening, they lowered the stretcher on which the paralytic was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic: “Child, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were there, sitting and reasoning in their hearts: “Why is this man talking this way? He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins except one, God?” But immediately Jesus discerned by his spirit that they were reasoning that way among themselves, so he said to them: “Why are you reasoning these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and pick up your stretcher and walk’? But in order for you to know that the Son of manj has authority to forgive sins on earth—” he said to the paralytic: “I say to you, Get up, pick up your stretcher, and go to your home.” At that he got up and immediately picked up his stretcher and walked out in front of them all. So they were all astonished, and they glorified God, saying: “We have never seen anything like this.” (Mark 2:1-12 NWT)
Parallel to 1 Kings where Solomon is praying to Jehovah, identifying that Jehovah forgives sins.
“When your people Israel are defeated by an enemy because they kept sinning against you, and they return to you and glorify your name and pray and beg you for favor in this house, may you then hear from the heavens and forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land that you gave to their forefathers. (1 Kings 8:33-34)
“Jesus said to them again: “May you have peace. Just as the Father has sent me, I also am sending you.” After saying this he blew on them and said to them: “Receive holy spirit. If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven; if you retain those of anyone, they are retained.” (John 20:21-23)
BELIEVERS CALL ON THE NAME OF JEHOVAH, BELIEVERS CALL ON THE NAME OF JESUS
I love Jehovah Because he hears my voice, my pleas for help. For he inclines his ear to me, And I will call on him as long as I live. (Psalm 116:1-2)
But I called on the name of Jehovah: “O Jehovah, rescue me!” (Psalm 116:4 NWT)
I will take up the cup of salvation, And I will call on the name of Jehovah. (Psalm 116:13 NWT)
I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving; I will call on the name of Jehovah. (Psalm 116:17 NWT)
Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will, and Sosʹthe·nes our brother, to the congregation of God that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in union with Christ Jesus, called to be holy ones, together with all those everywhere who are calling on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
Deuteronomy 32:43 (LXX) Proves that Jesus is Jehovah and that All Angels Worship Jehovah.
“But when he again brings his Firstborn into the inhabited earth, he says: “And let all of God’s angels do obeisance [proskyneo] to him.” (Hebrews 1:6 NWT)
There is debate whether this verse is quoting Deuteronomy 32:43 (LXX) or Psalm 95:6. Both verses would prove that Jesus is Jehovah.
“Rejoice, ye heavens, with him, and let all the angels of God worship him; rejoice ye Gentiles, with his people, and let all the sons of God strengthen themselves in him; for he will avenge the blood of his sons, and he will render vengeance, and recompense justice to his enemies, and will reward them that hate him; and the Lord shall purge the land of his people” (Deuteronomy 32:43 LXX)
Come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before Jehovah our Maker. (Psalm 95:6 NWT)
Every Tongue and Nation will Praise Jehovah, Jesus is Praised in the Same Way
Jehovah being worshipped by all creation
“All the nations that you made Will come and bow down before you, O Jehovah, And they will give glory to your name.” (Psalm 86:9 NWT)
Jesus being worshipped by all creation
For this very reason, God exalted him to a superior position and kindly gave him the name that is above every other name, so that in the name of Jesus every knee should bend—of those in heaven and those on earth and those under the ground and every tongue should openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:10-11)
And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and underneath the earth and on the sea, and all the things in them, saying: “To the One sitting on the throne and to the Lamb be the blessing and the honor and the glory and the might forever and ever.” The four living creatures were saying: “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshipped [proskyneo]. (Revelation 5:13 NWT)
JEHOVAH COMES WITH HIS REWARD, JESUS COMES WITH HIS REWARD
Look! Jehovah has proclaimed to the ends of the earth:“Say to the daughter of Zion,‘Look! Your salvation is coming. Look! His reward is with him,And the wage he pays is before him.’” (Isaiah 62:11 NWT)
Look! The Sovereign Lord Jehovah will come with power,And his arm will rule for him. Look! His reward is with him,And the wage he pays is before him. (Isaiah 40:10 NWT)
Yes, the seventh one in line from Adam, Eʹnoch, also prophesied about them when he said: “Look! Jehovah came with his holy myriads to execute judgment against all, and to convict all the ungodly concerning all their ungodly deeds that they did in an ungodly way, and concerning all the shocking things that ungodly sinners spoke against him.” (Jude 1:14-15)
For the Son of man is to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will repay each one according to his behavior. (Matthew 16:27 NWT)
He also tells me: “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, for the appointed time is near. Let the one who is unrighteous continue in unrighteousness, and let the filthy one continue in his filth; but let the righteous one continue in righteousness, and let the holy one continue in holiness. “‘Look! I am coming quickly, and the reward I give is with me, to repay each one according to his work. I am the Alʹpha and the O·meʹga, the first and the last, the beginning and the end . . . “The one who bears witness of these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming quickly.’” “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:10-13, 20 NWT)
JESUS DOES ONLY WHAT THE FATHER COMMANDS, THE SPIRIT ONLY DOES WHAT THE SON COMMANDS
“Therefore, in response Jesus said to them: “Most truly I say to you, the Son cannot do a single thing of his own initiative, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things that One does, these things the Son does also in like manner.” (John 5:19 NWT)
“However, when that one comes, the spirit of the truth, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak of his own initiative, but what he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things to come. That one will glorify me, because he will receive from what is mine and will declare it to you. All the things that the Father has are mine. That is why I said he receives from what is mine and declares it to you..” (John 16:13-15)
THOMAS CALLS JESUS GOD
Well, eight days later his disciples were again indoors, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and he stood in their midst and said: “May you have peace.” Next he said to Thomas: “Put your finger here, and see my hands, and take your hand and stick it into my side, and stop doubting but believe.” In answer Thomas said to him: “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him: “Because you have seen me, have you believed? Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe. (John 20:26-29 NWT)
OBJECTIONS FROM JW.ORG CONCERNING JOHN 20:28
My Lord and my God!: Lit., “The Lord of me and the God [ho the·osʹ] of me!” Some scholars view this expression as an exclamation of astonishment spoken to Jesus but actually directed to God, his Father. Others claim that the original Greek requires that the words be viewed as being directed to Jesus. Even if this is so, the intent of the expression “my Lord and my God” is best understood in the context of the rest of the inspired Scriptures. Since the record shows that Jesus had previously sent his disciples the message, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father and to my God and your God,” there is no reason to believe that Thomas thought that Jesus was the almighty God. (See study note on Joh 20:17.) Thomas had heard Jesus pray to his “Father,” calling him “the only true God.” (Joh 17:1-3) So Thomas may have addressed Jesus as “my God” for the following reasons: He viewed Jesus as being “a god” though not the almighty God. (See study note on Joh 1:1.) Or he may have addressed Jesus in a manner similar to the way that servants of God addressed angelic messengers of Jehovah, as recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures. Thomas would have been familiar with accounts in which individuals, or at times the Bible writer of the account, responded to or spoke of an angelic messenger as though he were Jehovah God. (Compare Ge 16:7-11, 13; 18:1-5, 22-33; 32:24-30; Jg 6:11-15; 13:20-22.) Therefore, Thomas may have called Jesus “my God” in this sense, acknowledging Jesus as the representative and spokesman of the true God. (JW.ORG)
OBJECTION #1) John 20:17 proves Jesus is not God.
ANSWER #1) This text does not support Jesus is not God because the Eternal Word became flesh (John 1:1-3, 14). Assuming to himself a Human Nature. So from the perspective of Jesus’ human nature, the Father is His God because The Father is the God of all flesh (Jeremiah 32:27-28).
OBJECTION #2) John 17:3 (they will also use 1 Corinthians 8:6) says only the Father can be attributed the status God.
ANSWER #2) The assumption/implication is God is Unipersonal, meaning that only one Person can be attributed the nature of God. However, this is not Scriptural because as this article has shown. The essence of God can be attributed to many Persons, and this still retains the Oneness of God (Deut 6:4).
JW CLAIM REFUTED -> WE CAN NOT PRAY TO JESUS DIRECTLY
I write you these things so that you may know that you have life everlasting, you who put your faith in the name of the Son of God. And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that no matter what we ask according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us concerning whatever we are asking, we know that we are to have the things we ask for, since we have asked them of him. (1 John 5:13-15)
Contextually, the him and his is referring to Jesus.
THE PRAYER OF STEPHEN PROVES THE TRINITY
As they were stoning Stephen, he made this appeal: “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then, kneeling down, he cried out with a strong voice: “Jehovah, do not charge this sin against them.” And after saying this, he fell asleep in death. (Acts 7:59-60 NWT)
In the first half of Acts 7:59, Stephen quotes Psalm 31:5, “Into your hand I entrust my spirit. You have redeemed me, O Jehovah, the God of truth.” (Psalm 31:5) which is a Psalm of David about being delivered BY JEHOVAH from distress. Or in other words Stephen recited a Psalm about Jehovah, and applied it to Jesus. To add on top of this, Jesus in Luke 23:46 says “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” (Luke 23:46 NWT). Unbeknownst to the JW, they just PROVED THE TRINITY, showing that the Essence of Jehovah is attributed to the Father and the Spirit!
Another thing to note is that within the Kingdom interlinear, the word Jehovah in verse 60 is not there in the Greek. The word that the JW’s translate as “Jehovah” is kyrie, and contextually that kyrie is Jesus! This is consistent with the Theology of the New Testament because Jesus in Mark 2 is shown having the authority to forgive sins.
OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES JEHOVAH IS PRAISED, OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES JESUS IS PRAISED!
O Jehovah our Lord, how majestic your name is throughout the earth; You have set your splendor even higher than the heavens! Out of the mouth of children and infants you have established strength On account of your adversaries,To silence the enemy and the avenger. (Psalm 8:1-2 NWT)
When the chief priests and the scribes saw the marvelous things he did and the boys who were shouting in the temple, “Save, we pray, the Son of David!” they became indignant and said to him: “Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them: “Yes. Did you never read this, ‘Out of the mouth of children and infants, you have brought forth praise’?” (Matthew 21:15-16)
Another significant point of the young men that are praising Jesus in the Temple is the anger that this caused the Jews “they became indignant” (v.15). The reason for this anger is because the word word “hosanna“ the transliteration of the Hebrew word (hoshia-nnah) in which this exact word that is attributed only to Jehovah.
Jehovah, save us (hoshia – H3467-nnah – H4994), please, we beg! Jehovah, grant us victory, please! (Psalm 118:25 NWT)
JEHOVAH HAS PRIESTS, THE SON HAS PRIESTS
Strangers will stand and shepherd your flocks, And foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers. As for you, you will be called the priests of Jehovah; They will call you the ministers of our God. You will eat the resources of the nations, And about their glory you will boast. (Isaiah 61:5-6 NWT)
Exalt Jehovah our God and bow down at his footstool; He is holy. Moses and Aaron were among his priests, And Samuel was among those calling on his name. They would call to Jehovah, And he would answer them. (Psalm 99:5-6 NWT)
Happy and holy is anyone having part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no authority, but they will be priests of God and of the Christ, and they will rule as kings with him for the 1,000 years. (Revelation 20:8 NWT)
JEHOVAH EXAMINES HEARTS, JESUS EXAMINES HEARTS
I, Jehovah, am searching the heart, Examining the innermost thoughts, To give to each one according to his ways, According to the fruitage of his works. (Jeremiah 17:10 NWT)
If you say, “But we did not know about this,”Does not the One who examines hearts discern it? Yes, the One who watches you will know And will repay each man according to his activity. (Proverbs 24:12 NWT)
“To the angel of the congregation in Thy·a·tiʹraj write: These are the things that the Son of God says, the one who has eyes like a fiery flame and whose feet are like fine copper: ‘I know your deeds, and your love and faith and ministry and endurance, and that your deeds of late are more than those you did at first. “‘Nevertheless, I do hold this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezʹe·bel who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and misleads my slaves to commit sexual immorality and to eat things sacrificed to idols. And I gave her time to repent, but she is not willing to repent of her sexual immorality. Look! I am about to throw her into a sickbed, and those committing adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds. And I will kill her children with deadly plague, so that all the congregations will know that I am the one who searches the innermost thoughts and hearts, and I will give to you individually according to your deeds. (Revelation 2:18-23)
