Is the Law of Moses “abolished”?

Is the Law of Moses “abolished” with in the New Covenant? It seems that this is the interpretation of many evangelicals. However, I don’t believe that the whole is nullified in the sense that there is no application of Old Testament principles in the New Testament. Rather, New Applications by the grace of Jesus as expressed in the New Testament.

For Example the Ten Commandments have a new application in the New Covenant

  • Under the Law of Christ, “Thou shalt not Murder” is not only physical murder, but murder in the heart as a byproduct of hatred
  • Under the Law of Christ, “Thou shalt not commit adultery” is not only physical adultery, but adultery of the heart through the means of lust. He also said that if you divorce without justification, that is committing adultery (Matthew 19:9).
  • Under the Law of Christ, “Thou shalt not covet” is expressed as a heart issue as well, since “where your treasure is, your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:19-24). Coveting is prohibited in the New Covenant. And greed keeps us away from the Promise of God (Mark 10:17-22).
  • Under the Law of Christ, “Thou shalt not steal”, is expressed as an attribute of “The thief” in John 10:10, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill and to destroy”. Paul expounds on this in Ephesians 4:28 by saying “Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labour, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.”
  • Under the Law of Christ, “Thou shalt have no gods before me/worship idols”, is condemned. Jesus says “no one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). Also Jesus quotes the Shema “the Lord our God is one” (Mark 12:29).
  • Under the Law of Christ, “Thou shalt not bear false witness” is affirmed by Jesus in the Rich Young rules, citing the Ten Commandments verbatim (Matthew 19:18). Paul affirms this idea in Ephesians 4:25Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.
  • Under the Law of Christ, “Honour you Mother and Father”, is affirmed in Ephesians 6. Imposing a stricter rule for the parents, that they might not provoke their children to disobey them. (Ephesians 6:1-4).
  • Under the Law of Christ “Thou shalt not take the Lord’s name in vain” is affirmed, and can take someone away from the grace of Christ. “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?, And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practise lawlessness!’”. (Matthew 7:22-23)
  • Under the Law of Christ, we enter the Sabbath through Christ by belief. (Hebrews 4)
  • Under the Law of Christ, we are circumcised “In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ”.
  • Under the Law of Christ, Paul used Deuteronomy 25:4You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain” in order to support the idea to financially support Ministers (1 Timothy 5:17 “Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.”)

It seems as though in the New Testament, there are many reinstatements of the Old Testament Torah. However, there application in light to Christ changes.
