Does Mark 2:27 Prove that The Sabbath is binding on all Creation?

Many Sabbatarians will use the verse Mark 2:27 in order to prove that observance of the Seventh-Day Sabbath. However, there are some flaws with this interpretation.

Point 1) “Made for man”  ≠ “Commanded for man”

In my video, I point out that the Mark 2:27 explicitly says “made for man” not “commanded to man”. In order to use this verse in order to prove Sabbath observance you would have to assume that. If the Sabbath was “made for man”, it must be “commanded to man”.

Point 2) Context

The immediate context alludes to the idea that the Law was not made to put one in bondage to it–making it unprofitable. For example, David and the Apostles were condemned under the Law, despite being hungry.

The Law was supposed to benefit man (i.e. why it was made for man), not to keep a man under a “yoke of slavery” (i.e the man for the Sabbath). The man for the Sabbath is in bondage under the Sabbath.

Galatians 3:19 gives us some insight into this idea that the “law was made to benefit man”.

“What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.”

Galatians 3:19 (NKJV)

The whole reason for the giving of the Law was to show Israel that they were sinful, and reunite them back to their Creator. However, Israel did the opposite when being confronted by the Law. They lacked faith, and ended up rejecting their Creator.

Point 3) If Mark 2:27 is saying that the Sabbath was “commanded to mankind”, where is the proof?

One question that I have for Sabbatarians is if Mark 2:27 is asserting the idea that the Seventh-Day Sabbath is commanded to all of Mankind. Where is the giving of the command to Mankind? Because you can not just beg the question when using Mark 2:27, you need to prove the claim that the Sabbath is binding on All Creation.

Sabbatarians will resort to the argument such as, “God sanctified the Sabbath day, therefore we must keep a Seventh-Day Sabbath”. However this is a false premise, you can’t use what is at question (the assumption Sabbath at Creation being binding on Mankind) to prove that the Sabbath is binding on Creation. The logical fallacy Sabbatarians express is shown in the diagram below.

If not Sabbath, why Sunday?

  • Because Jesus allows us to enter into God’s Sabbath, through His death and resurrection. The Early Christians in response to this phenomenon, decided to celebrate the Day in which Jesus brought forth this reality;the First Day—Sunday.
  • The First Day—Sunday being the memorial of the New Creation, in contrast to Saturday—the Seventh Day, representing the Old Creation.
  1. So no, the Sabbath, Murder, Adultery and Coveting along with the other Ten Commandments were not changed or made nullified in the New Covenant.
  2. Rather their application changed in the New Covenant, and we now keep this New but Old, Better, and non-burdensome Law.
  3. Murder is not nullified at the fact that in the New Covenant murder can be committed in the heart. Likewise with the Sabbath, adultery, circumcision etc.
